Nabia's Nation history
In the area where Nabia is located, an archaeological site was discovered in 1994, proving the presence of a prehistoric settlement during the Early Neolithic period, indicating an occupation of the territory dating back about six thousand years. It is assumed that the area was occupied by Lusitanian tribes and later by the Roman Empire. New evidence of subsequent occupation of the territory points to the early 16th century. The construction and settlement of the population in the territory of Nabia, formerly known as Ponte do Caia, was due to the Count of Rio Maior, owner of the lands. This occupation must have been prior to 1879, since there are documents, namely an account book referring to the rental of the lands between 1879 and 1885. In addition to the agricultural activity that took place there, there is speculation about the possibility that the buildings had a religious purpose at some point, since there are unofficial reports of this fact and also from an archaeological and architectural point of view, the evidence points in this direction. The remains of an ancient altar and the configuration of a central courtyard in the form of a cloister indicate a possible religious use of the buildings for a certain period. The images of the lost chapel were taken to Portugal, where they are located in the Hermitage of Our Lady of the Rosary, in the locality of Rosário, in the municipality of Moita.
